The Los Angeles Rams are set to expand running back Kyren Williams’ responsibilities in the 2024 season. Head coach Sean McVay announced Tuesday that Williams will take on punt return duties, adding a new dimension to his already significant role in the offense.
“It’s another opportunity for him to get touches and impact the game,” McVay explained. The coach expressed confidence in this decision, citing the depth provided by rookie Blake Corum and veteran Ronnie Rivers. “You feel comfortable with that because of the confidence in Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers being able to spell him if need be,” McVay added.
Williams had a breakout season in 2023, averaging nearly 22 touches per game and finishing third in the NFL in rushing despite playing only 12 games. His season was interrupted by a four-game absence due to an ankle sprain, and he sat out an additional game for rest after the Rams secured a playoff berth.
To help manage Williams’ workload, the Rams selected Blake Corum in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. McVay noted the similarities between Williams and Corum, suggesting a potential complementary backfield duo.
Despite his productivity, Williams has faced injury challenges in his young career. He’s played in just 22 games over two seasons, missing time in his rookie year with a high ankle sprain. More recently, he underwent offseason hand surgery following an injury in the Rams’ playoff loss to the Detroit Lions. Williams also missed most of the team’s offseason program due to a follow-up procedure on a previous foot surgery.
When healthy, Williams has proven to be a dynamic offensive weapon. In the 2023 season, he accumulated 1,144 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 228 carries, while also contributing 32 receptions and three receiving touchdowns.
As the Rams look to maximize Williams’ impact while managing his health, his new role as a punt returner adds an intriguing element to watch in the upcoming season. The team’s approach to balancing Williams’ expanded responsibilities with preserving his health will be crucial to their offensive success in 2024.
